The Sea Fury flying off HMCS Magnificent; one of a total of 75 Sea Furys which served with the Royal Canadian Navy between 1948 and 1956. The Sea Fury's flew from the Aircraft Carrier HMCS MAGNIFICENT in 871 Squadron. The Sea Fury was the last piston engine fighter to be used by the Navy, and one of the best of its type, showing itself on many occasions to be superior to the state-of-the-art enemy jets of the Korean conflict. This beautifully restored Sea Fury is displayed in the main gallery at the museum.

This naval version of the famous WW II Spitfire was one of 280 aircraft built in 1945. Thirty-five saw service in the Royal Canadian Navy. FZ 425 was deployed on board HMCS Warrior until August 1947 when it was transferred to the Training Air Group in Dartmouth, N.S. It was retired from service upon arrival of the Sea Furys in 1949. In 1954, it was flown to Calgary and turned over to the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology as a training aid in the Department Of Aeronautical Engineering. In 1960, it was relocated to HMCS Tecumseh, Calgary's naval reserve division.

In 1981, HMCS Tecumseh was destroyed by fire. The aircraft was on display outside of the reserve building and was therefore not affected by the blaze. But the fire raised the issue of preserving the Seafire from any possible future harm. A museum was proposed to house and preserve the aircraft. The Aero Space Museum of Calgary restored the Seafire and returned it to Tecumseh and eventually moved into the newly constructed Naval Museum of Alberta.

Delivered to the United States Navy in October, 1952, the Banshee served at various U.S. naval air stations and the USS Coral Sea and USS Hornet. It was stricken from the U.S. Navy inventory in June 1956 and delivered to the Royal Canadian Navy in July 1956.

The Banshee was struck from the Royal Canadian Navy inventory in September 1962, flown to Calgary in 1963 and used for instructional purposes at SAIT until August, 1978. The aircraft remained outside HMCS Tecumseh until 1988 at which time it was moved into the Naval Museum of Alberta.
