This naval version of the famous WW II Spitfire was one of 280 aircraft built in 1945. Thirty-five saw service in the Royal Canadian Navy. FZ 425 was deployed on board HMCS Warrior until August 1947 when it was transferred to the Training Air Group in Dartmouth, N.S. It was retired from service upon arrival of the Sea Furys in 1949.
In 1954, it was flown to Calgary and turned over to the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology as a training aid in the Department Of Aeronautical Engineering. In 1960, it was relocated to HMCS Tecumseh, Calgary's naval reserve division.
In 1981, HMCS Tecumseh was destroyed by fire. The aircraft was on display outside of the reserve building and was therefore not affected by the blaze. But the fire raised the issue of preserving the Seafire from any possible future harm. A museum was proposed to house and preserve the aircraft. The Aero Space Museum of Calgary restored the Seafire and returned it to Tecumseh and eventually moved into the newly constructed Naval Museum of Alberta.
