The Naval Museum is the beneficiary of the Ken Macpherson collection of photographs. Within this collection there are approximately 50,000 images, as well as ship plans and correspondence. Comprised of official Department of Defence photographs, the collection also provides a rare glimpse of social history aboard Canadian ships though a series of private or unofficial photographs. This collection is one of the largest collections of naval photographs in Canada .

Macpherson served in 1944 to 1945 as a telegraphist with RCNVR. In 1959, he joined the government of Ontario as an historical researcher with the Provincial archives. After eighteen years of service, a portion of which he was the custodian of the photograph collection, Macpherson retired and continues his research of the Canadian Navy. Macpherson is author of Canada 's fighting Ships, minesweepers of the Canadian Navy, Frigates of the Royal Canadian Navy 1943 - 1974, River Class Destroyers of the Royal Canadian Navy.

He is co-author with Marc Milner of Corvettes of the Royal Canadian Navy, 1943-1974. He is also an associate editor of Warship International and co-author of The Ships of Canada's Naval Forces 1910-1981. Mr Macpherson is author of Canada 's Fighting Ships as well as the books on Sweepers, Frigates, and River class and co-author, with Marc Milner, of Corvettes. He has been an associate editor of Warship International since 1966.
