The Naval Museum of Alberta library is the largest Naval research library in Canada with over 3,000 books in the collection. Although we do not lend out materials, these facilities are available to the public for research purposes by appointment.

Please call The Museum at (403) 242-0002 or email librarian@navalmuseum.ab.ca

The library is dedicated to Naval Historian, John Burgess, who has made a significant contribution to the scholarship of Canada's naval history. His many projects include collecting meticulous records of the Royal Canadian Navy and various other Navies. This includes listings of fleet and ship technical and movement histories. In 1980, Mr. Burgess and Ken McPherson another Canadian naval historian collaborated to produce "The Ships of Canada's Navy 1910 - 1980", an illustrated reference book detailing the statistics and history of every ship in the Canadian Navy since 1910.

The love and dedication Mr. Burgess had for all things Navy are exemplified by his having bequeathed his personal library and collection of documents to the Naval Museum. John Burgess passed away September 17th, 1997 and his ashes were distributed at sea by his widow, Gwen, from the quarterdeck of HMCS Calgary.
